I have no knowledge of the science behind it, but it makes intuitive sense to me given how sunlight changes the color of wood floors, curtains, etc.

I meant to say in my earlier comment that I had no idea how copyright works for blogs, never having had a reason to research it. A good bit of the prohibition of photo...@ Annie --

A good bit of the prohibition of photographs must be that the museums want to sell their own high-quality images . . . and their own postcards. I dunnoh if it's a big money maker. There's some discussion of this on the site I linked to about Public domain works in a Digital Age. Museums do seem determined on it.

But I believe it's also that some flashbulbs harm delicate materials, including old pictures. I think I'm right on this, though it's not something I know anything about. Sounds ridiculous -- 'light' harming something -- but curators worry about it, and I imagine they'd know.Jo Bournehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13457862962618886252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15617001.post-89634440756463230822011-01-01T16:03:07.448-05:002011-01-01T16:03:07.448-05:00Thank you for this detailed explanation, Jo.
A q...Thank you for this detailed explanation, Jo.

A question for you: In the image ALT tag, I always write the title of the image plus copyrighted by and URl of site. Is this good enough attribution? That so many museums are now coming round to this indicates they realize they've been in the wrong and their assertion of intellectual property is actually counter to their stated mission. In my experience, museums are increasingly likely to charge only for supplying a reproduction-quality image (ie, one that will reproduce well in a print publication)as opposed to permission for its use. I've never been to the Louvre, but I'm assuming, as is the case with most museums, you can't pop in with your digital camera and snap a picture of the Mona Lisa.Anniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00480968583416513772noreply@blogger.com
